IT professionals spend countless hours working to manage the storage in their
care. Businesses completely rely on their IT departments to keep their data,
websites, and systems online and functioning properly so they may continue to
succeed. Admins must have the ability to quickly respond to changes in the
business while staying in budget. As a result, the concept of storage
management is constantly changing.
Every IT Admin has a different way of dealing with storage management. While
some still work with physical space, many IT teams are looking at
virtualization and redundancy in the Cloud. Many find this approach helps to
stay agile as their business changes. In this model, enterprise-level storage
is kept in "pools" often hosted by vendors who specialize in virtual storage.
On the physical storage, the space may be on several different servers,
depending on the... (more)
Last year was big in the cloud computing arena. Companies like 365 Media and
ZettaGrid began using private cloud systems, providing better business
agility at a lower TCO. Both companies utilized scale-out Ethernet storage
solution company, Coraid, to build their customized cloud solutions.
In order to support cloud service providers, Coraid entered into partnerships
with OpenStack vendors. In turn, Coraid provided drivers for Ethernet storage
to the OpenStack Cinder project for block storage, ultimately enabling
storage access over connectionless, massively parallel 10 Gigabit Et... (more)
While technology changes on a regular basis, IT teams have had a standard
approach to administration. In recent years, however, there has been a
drastic shift in data center administration. One of the biggest shifts is the
adoption of private and public clouds. In part one of this series, we will
examine private cloud architectures.
Today, companies keep more and more data electronically in lieu of hard
copies. Whether they are large multi-layer Photoshop images or files that
need to be kept in order to comply with medical or financial regulations,
files are getting bigger and t... (more)
Data server admins are always on the lookout for changes in the industry that
will help do their job better, keep their data safer, and speed up file
access. The old standbys in recent years have been iSCSI and Fibre Channel.
These high-speed technologies have been good matches for storage applications
like database use and management where use can be intense. They can, however,
be quite costly to keep up and running properly and they require a lot of
care and maintenance. A new alternative to iSCSI and Fibre Channel is
